A judge jailed Bruce McConville, 55, a Canadian businessman for 30 days after the defendant admitted to burning one million Canadian dollars in cash to avoid paying his wife spousal and child support.
The monies were part of a divorce settlement which McConville didn’t want his wife to have. According to reports, he burned the dough in two piles after withdrawing the amounts from his bank account.
In an Ottawa Superior Court hearing last week, Bruce McConville, 55, told a judge he withdrew about 1 million Canadian dollars — about $750,000 USD — in 25 separate withdrawals from six separate bank accounts. He claimed he then burned the cash in two bonfires – $743,000 on Sept. 23 and $296,000 on Dec. 15, Ottawa Citizen reported.
McConville, who ran for mayor of Ottawa in 2018, claimed to have receipts to prove he withdrew the money. He said he did not record the bonfires and no one witnessed him set the cash ablaze.
“Can I back you up a bit? When you say you destroyed it, what do you mean?” Superior Court Justice Kevin Phillips asked, to which McConville replied: “I burnt it.”
“It’s not something that I would normally do,” McConville said, according to Ottawa Citizen. “I am not a person that is extremely materialistic. A little goes a long way. I have always been frugal. That’s why my business lasted for 31 years.”
“I don’t believe you. I don’t trust you. I don’t think you’re honest,” the judge told him. “I find what you have done to be morally reprehensible because what you claim to have done willfully and directly undermines the interests of your children.” [Fox2News]
Canada and liberals aren’t our problems. It’s our complacency and giving them the attention that gives them power. Libs, Canada, etc. are like a small child who throws a tantrum to get attention.
They got nothing if substance but disguise it as rage and hollow rhetoric. I don’t care what they do. Give unto Caesar what is Caesars. We normal taxpaying family people give them what they want when we pay attention to them. They’re a bunch of miserable malcontents who crave attention and power.
I wish we knew the back story to all this. Did one cheat on the other? Has she always been greedy? How old are the children, and why couldn’t he just set up a trust with the money for them? This was very selfish on his part, but it is his money. If she was just along for the gravy train, then she shouldn’t be entitled to any of it.
Having been through two divorces, I have a few lessons I have to pass on. You’re divorcing your wife, not your children. You can’t hurt your ex without hurting your children. The best revenge is living a good life without her.
Instead of having hate, have indifference, it is really cold revenge. You can always make more money. If you were together, you would be paying for your children anyway. Being divorced, I have lived a life most men only dream of. After the shock wore off, I realized it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I thank God for unanswered prayers; she could still be making me miserable.
In summary, I don’t believe that he burned the money, and 30 days in jail is worth it. One thing is for sure, he should be paying child support.
