CPAC 2020 Day 1 in Review; Kay Coles James And VP Mike Pence Soar!

I have been coming to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) since 2013. I honestly thought I would skip this year, but you have to remember, it’s an election year, and this is when CPAC rises to the occasion.

I decided to skip radio row for the second straight year and return to my roots, blogging the conference speakers and connecting with those who weren’t able to attend, giving them a sense of what was happening. One of the most significant changes I saw when entering the main ballroom was the size and scope. I had never seen the room reach back so far; I was in awe.

The media cameras which usually were in the back of the room were moved to the right side and placed high on risers, looking down onto the stage, giving more seating room to those who wanted to get in. The media area grew also, and hopefully, most of the those who were given passes to cover the event are not using the limited WiFi for their personal use, as I have seen in the past. [another story]

With that said, CPAC starts.

As the Republican Party has its standard-bearer sitting in the Oval Office in President Donald Trump, there is no other competition for the Republican nomination. He will grace the crowd on Saturday afternoon to close out the conference.

The story of the 1st day in my mind was Vice President Mike Pence and Heritage Foundation chairman Kay Coles James. She lit up the room like I haven’t seen before and she was spectacular.

James told those in attendance how “we face a battle today between those who want to preserve this nation and those who want to bring her down from within.” She also added how the left was trashing our founding principles in public schools, by lying to our young future minds repeatedly” about America not being a great country. “They are trashing the fact that America is exceptional—yes, I said it!”

But she also reminded everyone that all was not lost. “We have a stronger will to win because of what’s at stake,” James explained. The left doesn’t “get it. We do.”

Then you had VP Pence.

Along with informing the crowd that Pres. Trump has followed through with his promises and needed another four more years to finish the job; the Vice President also tried to assure the audience that the President and his administration are prepared for the threat of the coronavirus.

“While the risk to the American public remains low, as the President said yesterday, we’re ready. We’re ready for anything,” Pence began his remarks.

Pence looked every bit of presidential as he could, commanding the room while often drowned out by cheers of “Four more years!” and “USA.” The Vice President spoke on the prosperous economy and increase in jobs, promising that another four years of Trump would equate to greater economic growth. “In three short years, we’ve made America great again,” he said to roaring applause.

I almost felt like I was back in basic training with the audience rising and sitting throughout Pence’s speech, but it was all worth it. Pence knew he had the crowd when he mentioned the number of federal justice appointments made by the President while commenting on Trump’s pro-life policy positions. “I couldn’t be more proud than to stand with a President who, without apology, stands for the sanctity of life. To every Republican, Independent, or Democrat, you have a home in today’s Republican Party. President Donald Trump is the most pro-life President in American History.”

There were a lot of breakout sessions, individuals being interviewed on radio row, and other magnificent things happening the first day of the CPAC conference.

All I can say is that I am happy to be a part of it for 2020, and I look forward to giving you more information about the event over the weekend.
