As a celebrity-obsessed society we not only want to know what a candidate stands for, we want to know the personal side of them as well. Yeah, the juicy stuff.

Granted, there are some aspects of a private life that are telling. But most of the coverage of such matters is little more than salacious piffle, only brought to the reader when other news is played out or overcovered.

A decent journalist steeped in the tradition of Murrow and Sevareid would never stoop as to traffic in such lowbrow gossip. That’s why we’re lucky I’m only a writer.

Let’s talk about Mike Bloomberg’s girlfriend.

Her name is Diana Lancaster Taylor and she has been the former mayor’s steady since 2000, two years before Bloomberg became mayor of the Big Apple.

She’s a Dartmouth grad, worked as an aide to former New York GOP Governor George Pataki, was superintendent of banking for the State of New York, and was a managing director at the Wall Street firm Wolfensohn. Not to mention that while Bloomberg was in office she was the informal First Lady of NYC. The NY state GOP even asked her to run against Democrat Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Taylor demurred. She also wasn’t a big fan of the disgraced 44th president.

These days she’s sticking by her man with a no-nonsense real-world approach to the sexual bias charges against him:”Those NDAs were signed 30 years ago. They have come up in every single solitary election he has ever been in. And in none of them was he accused of doing anything, saying something nasty to a woman. That is not who he is. Life has changed. I grew up in that world. It was a bro culture.”

She added.

“That was the culture back then. It takes time to change a culture. We have come a very, very long way and Michael Bloomberg has been at the forefront of that change.”

Not so sure about the forefront brag, but it is refreshing to hear a woman who doesn’t play the victim when confronted with boorish male behavior. Wonder if it’s too late to get her to run against Gillibrand?
