Amazon engineer Max Eliaser, SDE II had a stark warning for the company he works for in the area of home security and it’s a very important one that needs to be taken seriously.
Eliaser wrote on Medium: “The deployment of connected home security cameras that allow footage to be queried centrally are simply not compatible with a free society. The privacy issues are not fixable with regulation and there is no balance that can be struck. Ring should be shut down immediately and not brought back.”

Lots of people have had their accounts compromised on other services and use and/or use the same passwords elsewhere. And many people don’t use two-level authorization which many companies, including these camera companies, have stated you should use, even though they don’t make it mandatory since so many find it annoying.
That said, so many companies have had user data hacked because they don’t have strong enough security, data isn’t split among various servers, data isn’t encrypted. So in all likelihood blame falls on both parties.
Amazon’s Ring is not the only one just the most talked about one, there are many other CCTV systems that are on the internet and people hack into them all the time and people don’t even know, Ring has mics so the hackers can talk to the people that’s the only way they know.
