We recently reflected on the best gift we can give God and concluded that it was our heart.

But what does that look like for us in everyday life?

What does the Bible mean when it says to “do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6‬:8‬).

In the verses previous to this one, the question is posed of whether God will be pleased with our gifts of wealth or other material sacrifices (Micah 6:6-7).

But wouldn’t you agree that we can give material things without giving any part of our heart?

I gave a large portion of my resources to the church, missions and other charitable causes — without giving God my heart.

My giving was only to assuage my conscience and to receive the approval of people — not because I loved God.

It made me feel better about myself.

Is that the way we give gifts to someone we truly love?

What would the person think if he or she knew we were really just giving for a selfish reason?

God knows our heart.

The Bible says, “The LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (I Samuel‬ ‭16:7‬).

That’s why it’s so important that we give our heart to Him.

When our heart belongs to God, it’s exactly where it was created to be.

Then, we give to Him the way He gives to us.

How do we give Him our heart?

We must be born again and accept the gift of salvation.

After we receive His gift, our relationship with Him must be the most precious part of our existence.

In His presence, we learn to give like He does.

We give our irreplaceable time — and in the purity of His Spirit we “do justice, love kindness and walk humbly.”

Every minute of our time is a gift from God, borne on our frail breath and the beat of our heart.

When God has our heart, we have His Spirit — and we give as He gives to us.
