If firing for “ethical lapses” becomes common in Chicago, there will be no politicians or senior officials left.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot fired the city’s retiring police superintendent Eddie Johnson on Monday, citing “ethical lapses.” Johnson allegedly was not fort with about being found asleep at the wheel of his car after having a few drinks. Can you imagine that?
How does anyone place Chicago and ethical standards in the same sentence? Well, I guess I just learned something new for the day although I’m still pretty sure their “ethics” is “don’t get caught.”
If we really want to talk about ethical lapses, someone should be looking into the ethical issues of District Attorney Kim Foxx and the Jussie Smollett fiasco. Let’s be as vigilant to pursue that as they are this witchhunt.
The former Chicago Police Superintendent is probably very happy right now. He’ll move to some small town, become chief, and retire in a few years a happy and more relaxed man.
Named to the job in the wake of a police shooting that killed a black teenager, Johnson was dismissed after the mayor reviewed an inspector general’s report and video evidence related to the night in mid-October when officers discovered him unconscious in his SUV at a stop sign. He initially blamed his failure to take his blood pressure medication and said he had a few drinks with dinner earlier in the evening.
The officers did not conduct any sobriety tests and let their boss drive home. It was unclear if they would be disciplined.
Johnson “engaged in a series of actions that are intolerable for any leader or position of trust, particularly the head of the Chicago Police Department,” the mayor said. His conduct was “not only unbecoming but demonstrates a series of ethical lapses and flawed decision-making.” [Associated Press]
When did passed out in your car, with the smell of alcohol on your breath become an ethical lapse for Chicago cops? Just kidding people. That said, most cops drink to deal with the stress, everybody knows this and he wasn’t hurting anyone from what I can tell.
Hey, let’s look at all the good he did for Chicago and the Force. None of that was mentioned. One incident — big deal. I hope he will not lose any of his pension and other benefits. He served too well for that to happen.

I think the Justice Department should investigate Lightfoot and see if any of this has to be retribution for Smollett. How deep does the fallen actor’s support go and did it have any part in firing a 30-year police veteran about to retire.
Remember, the prosecutor suddenly and very sneaky dropped all the charges that the police dept charged him with. Isn’t that called an ethical lapse in judgment? Was the prosecutor pushed to drop the charges from a very high former public official? Was the mayor forced to show the police who is really in charge by forcing the mayor to fire the head of the police dept? This really needs to be looked into.
