Randi Chaverria was a decorated administrator being awarded the Secondary Teacher of the Year. She also led a community service project called “Adopt-A-Child.”

That project got high school students involved with adopting elementary school students in need and purchasing holiday gifts.

On Tuesday, Randi turned herself into the local officials at Williamson County jail and was charged with “improper relationship between educator and student.”

Chaverria turned herself into Williamson County Jail on Tuesday morning and has been released after posting bond. She has not yet entered a plea, and court records do not reflect an attorney authorized to speak on her behalf.

Randi Chaverria, 36, was a Family and Consumer Science teacher at Round Rock High School. According to an affidavit first obtained by KVUE-TV, she had sexual contact with a student several times during the 2019 fall semester. The student allegedly told police that she had performed oral sex on him twice in October.

Police reviewed text messages between Chaverria and the student, the affidavit states. Authorities allege that the text messages appear to back up the student’s accusations.

Chaverria has resigned from her position as a teacher.

In a letter to families, Round Rock High School principal Matt Groff said that the school district first learned about the possible inappropriate behavior on November 18.

“Once notified, the teacher, who had elected to take leave before administration received the report, was immediately reported to the District’s Human Resources Department and law enforcement and not permitted to return to campus,” Groff wrote, according to KXAN-TV.

Groff also wrote that the case has been reported to the State Board for Educator Certification. [People]

Why would a teacher have students’ cell phone number, unless you are sleeping with them? During my day (the ’80s), teachers or the school only called your home if you missed multiple days or were about to fail their class, and they only talked to your parents.

Sometimes the cream rises to the top with the teacher of the year program, but my observation from the inside is that it is mostly a popularity contest. I am familiar with a state’s Principal of the Year recipient that wound up getting arrested for mishandling program funds. Most teachers are unsung heroes that never receive awards because they are too busy being good teachers.

I know there will some jokes that go along with this story. Joke about this all you want. The fact remains: there is a double standard when it comes to sexual abuse cases concerning a female teacher vs. a male teacher. Let’s do the same consequences for this woman as you would a man.

That kid is not the sharpest knife in the drawer and obviously failed Family and Consumer Science. In 10 more years, he’ll probably be arrested for trying to buy the same service.

Do you think Randi will see a considerable amount of jail time for her actions?
